Iskatewizaagegan No. 39 Independent Nation and Ontario Ministry of Transportation

Iskatewizaagegan No. 39 Independent First Nation (the “Nation”) wishes to announce that today a contract was signed between the Nation’s Highway Corridor Limited Partnership and the Ministry of Transportation for the construction of the upgrades to Provincial Highway 673 (the “Project”).

The Project is the result of over ten (10) years of relationship building between the Nation and the Ontario Crown as represented by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). The Nation is proud of the work that has been done over these last ten (10) year, and is pleased to be able to undertake the work required for the successful completion of Project. The Nation’s Highway Corridor Limited Partnership, and the Nation’s members that will take part in the Project, illustrates the Nation and its members’ abilities, capacities and willingness to successfully take part in road construction and upgrade projects now and into the future, including the work necessary for the proposed twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Project represents a positive step towards the reconciliation of the Nation’s rights with Ontario’s interests, and the Nation wishes to thank MTO and its representatives for their hard work and dedication towards the Project and the signing of this contract and provision of funding to complete. The Nation also wishes to thank the Honourable Greg Rickford, the MPP for the Kenora-Rainy River for his work in moving the Project along, and for building relationships amongst the various Ministries on behalf of the Nation. The Nation looks forward to continued good relations with MTO and Minister Rickford as we jointly work together to make the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway a reality.
